About Margaret River
Margaret River, 3 hours drive south of Western Australia's capital city, Perth, is one of Australia’s favourite holiday places. Strolling down the main street, it is easy to picture the slow lazy Saturday mornings of the 50s; locals drawing together to wave goodbye to another family leaving town when times were really tough; the early days of the surfers, who made the trip down from Perth to their newly discovered surf break and the colour and spice of the 70’s alternate culture. Home to 10,000 locals and a holiday mecca for thousands, Margaret River in 2008 is the ultimate magical mix of great surf, food, fine wine and spectacular scenery...and all just a relaxed three-and-a-half hour drive south of Perth.
There's a fine supply of nature at its best; world class surf breaks and wineries; great breweries, restaurants, surf breaks and a plethora of delightful boutique shops on the main street, including some wonderful art galleries of local works to view.
Producing less than one per cent of Australian wine, but over 15 per cent of the country's premium wine, the Margaret River Wine region is on the international wine lovers’ calendar. With 100’s of wineries to choose from, there are heaps of choices. To top it off there is a multitude of great regional chefs, specialists with local produce i.e., crayfish, marron, cheeses, jams, condiments, olives, berries. There are even chocolate, fudge and ice-cream factories with free tastings.
The rugged coastline, white sandy beaches, turquoise water, towering forests and coastal bush walk trails is matched with the equally beautiful pristine subterranean network of caves, open for viewing...
If you are looking for a more experiential holiday, top of the list of things to do is Margaret River’s latest adventure... sunset roo safaris! This is your chance to get up close and personal with the local fauna. Or what about rock climbing, abseiling, canoeing or whale watching? The choice is yours.
There is a place to stay to suit all budgets; from 5 star luxury lodges to backpackers and caravan parks. Getting there is also easy.... just three-and-a-half hour drive from Perth.
